Everyone Needs a Walkie-Talkie Headset - And Other Truths

When we were kids I think it is fair to assume that most of us got a kick out of running around our house or our neighborhoods with cool walkie talkie handsets. More than likely most of the walkie-talkies we used were nothing more than cheap toys with the ability to transmit a dozen or so yards, and make some pretty aggravating noise using the Morse code signal. No doubt, if you have children you have seen their fascination with these small, handheld radios as well. There is something that draws us to the fact that we can talk with our friends across the block using this little handheld radio.

As with everything else in the realm of technology, walkie-talkies have become smaller and more portable. Whereas when we were young it was incredible to have a walkie-talkie unit that would fit in our hands, now they make walkie talkie headsets, walkie-talkie watches, and even walkie-talkies throat mics. The technology is mind boggling.

Now I know most of us have outgrown the days of running around our neighborhood on a hot summer night playing tag with our friends, but walkie-talkies still have some great real-world applications for adults. For those of us who like to wargame during our recreational time, the headset hands-free walkie-talkies are great. They allow us to continue to track our target on the opposing team, and not have to worry about keying the mic every time we want to talk. Additionally, the smaller wristwatch walkie talkie allows moms and dads to give a very portable unit to their child and attach it to their wrists. This alleviates having to worry about whether the child will inadvertently set the walkie-talkie radio down someplace. This way the parents know they will always be able to contact the child.

Another potential neat use for the hands-free walkie-talkie headset is that moms (or dads) can have the headset engaged and communicating with their children who may be playing in the neighborhood while they are doing chores or relaxing back at the house. The VOX functionality of the headset is excellent because it allows the user to be able to engage the headset mic and initiate voice transmissions without having to worry about hitting a button to do so.

The bottom line is that handheld radio communications for the private sector have come a long way over the last two decades. Everybody used to love to talk on the CB, but it wasn't incredibly practical for everyday use because odds are you are not going to have a radio manpack at your disposal. The compact nature of today's walkie-talkie communications equipment makes it a great asset for families and businesses alike.
